About This Archive

Some inheritances reveal themselves through the things we choose to keep close.

For All of It, Needra chose a raised fist hook, a symbol that represents resistance, solidarity, strength, and loyalty to her. Its meaning became even more personal through its connection to ILWU Local 10, the union her father belonged to for more than 30 years.

Her father appears elsewhere in Needra’s story as the person who advocated for her when she was young. Here, that connection takes physical form. The values Needra sees in the symbol are also values that have followed her through her own life.

Presented here, the piece holds both memory and inheritance: a connection to her father, a reflection of the woman she became, and a reminder that what we carry forward is not always something we can name until we recognize it.

What She Carries Forward

“It represents resistance, solidarity, strength and loyalty, which speaks volumes to me.” — Needra

A raised fist hook chosen by Needra for the values it represents to her, with an unexpected connection to ILWU Local 10, the union her father belonged to for more than 30 years. Together, the symbol and its connection to her father hold something larger: the strength, loyalty, and willingness to stand firm that Needra recognizes in her own life.

Behind the Story

Needra chose this object because the raised fist hook represents values that speak directly to her: resistance, solidarity, strength, and loyalty.

Then there is the connection to her father. The symbol represents ILWU Local 10, the union he belonged to for more than 30 years. The same father who advocated for Needra when she was young appears here again, this time through an object she chose for herself.

The piece preserves something All of It explores in words: what we carry from the people who came before us does not always arrive as an heirloom. Sometimes it lives in the values we recognize as our own.

What we save often reveals what shaped us. The Archive preserves these objects as evidence of the things that endure across generations. Strength, loyalty, memory, and the values passed from one life to another can live in what we keep, quietly connecting who we have become to the people who helped shape us.
