All of It

All of It

Some playlists soundtrack a story. Others tell you something about the person behind it.

All of It is a companion to Needra’s Legacy Feature, but it isn’t a musical retelling of her life.

It moves across decades of R&B, soul, funk, gospel, hip-hop, pop, and the songs she simply loves. There is no requirement that every track explain where Needra has been or what she has lived through.

That may be what makes the collection feel most like her.

The feature gives Needra the room to tell her story in her own words. The playlist lets us hear some of the music she has loved, returned to, and carried with her along the way.

From the Editor

A good companion playlist should tell us something the written story cannot.

Needra’s does.

All of It is drawn from a much longer list of songs Needra shared with The Living Room. What made it into this collection offers a glimpse across decades, genres, and different parts of a life. There is R&B, gospel, funk, hip-hop, soul, and more. There are songs for worship, love, dancing, reflection, confidence, and songs Needra simply enjoys listening to.

That distinction matters.

A person is always larger than the story we publish about them.

Needra’s music does not stay in one era, one genre, or one version of who she is. And not every song has to carry the weight of what she has survived.

The playlist gives us another way into the woman we meet in All of It.

As you listen, resist the urge to make every song explain Needra.

Sometimes what someone chooses to keep in rotation tells you enough.

Liner Notes

We Are One — Maze feat. Frankie Beverly

There is something fitting about beginning with We Are One in Needra’s collection.

Family sits at the center of the way she talks about tradition, loyalty, and what she hopes will continue after her. Even when she talks about herself, the story keeps finding its way back to the people connected to her.

That makes We Are One feel at home beside All of It.

Not because every lyric has to map neatly onto Needra’s life, but because togetherness matters to her. Staying connected matters. Loyalty matters.

For a woman who names family, consistency, and longevity when asked about tradition, the sentiment feels familiar.

I Love Music — The O’Jays

Needra does not make us guess how she feels about music.

“I love music. It’s probably my number one love in the arts.”

Then you see the list she sent.

Decades of it. Gospel beside hip-hop. Funk beside R&B. Old favorites beside newer records. Music for church, skating, dancing, remembering, and simply because the song is good.

I Love Music does not need a deeper interpretation.

Sometimes the liner note is already in the title.

Needra loves music.

And this playlist lets us hear just a little of how much.

My Prerogative — Bobby Brown

Then there is My Prerogative.

It is difficult not to smile when this song appears beside a story in which Needra says, plainly:

“Ain’t nobody tell me what to do. I’m gonna do what the hell I want to do.”

We meet that part of her early. The little girl who knew she was not supposed to go swimming and went anyway. The mother who stood firm in decisions about her own body. The 61-year-old woman who still knows exactly where she stands.

That does not mean My Prerogative has to explain Needra.

It just sounds particularly good sitting next to her story.
