Curator's Note

Before childhood was organized by calendars and screens, much of it happened outside.

The street was a playground. The porch was a gathering place. The sound of bicycle tires, jump ropes striking pavement, and an ice cream truck turning the corner could call an entire block into motion.

Outside preserves the ordinary rituals of neighborhood life—the games, friendships, freedom, and shared spaces that helped raise us. These images do not represent one exact block or one family's history. Together, they form a visual memory of the places where Black childhood unfolded in public, in community, and often within sight of home.
