Curator's Note

Long before beauty became an industry, it was a tradition.

It lived in beauty supply store aisles, at kitchen tables, beneath hooded dryers, and in neighborhood salons where appointments often lasted longer because the conversations mattered just as much as the style. It was passed from mothers to daughters, aunties to nieces, stylists to first-time clients—not only through technique, but through care.

Every braid, press, fresh set, jar of grease, magazine clipping, bottle on the shelf, and piece of jewelry tells a story about creativity, identity, and community. These rituals helped us prepare for graduations, first dates, church on Sunday, family reunions, and ordinary days that still deserved to feel special.

Crowned celebrates the artistry behind those moments. It honors the spaces where beauty was practiced, the hands that shaped it, and the generations who understood that caring for ourselves was never just about how we looked—it was also about how we carried ourselves.

Because some things are inherited.

And some crowns are earned.
