Becoming
Margin 001
Becoming
August 2026
There are certain thoughts that don't belong in the center of the page.
They live off to the side—underlined, circled twice, returned to years later. The kinds of thoughts that seem unfinished until life quietly finishes them for us.
Maybe that's what the margins are for.
Lately, I've been wondering if we've misunderstood becoming.
We talk about it as though it's waiting somewhere ahead of us—as though one day we'll finally arrive, shake hands with our future selves, and recognize the person we've worked so hard to become.
But becoming has never felt that dramatic to me.
It has always arrived quietly.
I've been thinking about homes.
Not the kind you purchase.
The kind you grow into.
A home doesn't announce itself the day you receive the keys. It reveals itself slowly. It learns where you leave your shoes, which cabinet you open without thinking, the chair everyone instinctively chooses, the song that somehow always ends up playing while dinner is being made.
Little by little, a place begins remembering you.
Perhaps people become the same way.
Not all at once.
Not in the moments we expect.
But in the ordinary rhythm of living.
While choosing patience over proving a point.
While calling someone back.
While changing your mind.
While forgiving the version of yourself who could only live with what she knew then.
Nothing announces those moments.
Yet they become the architecture of a life.
When I look back, I don't remember the days I thought would define me nearly as much as I remember the quiet ones.
The conversation that stayed with me.
The season that asked more than I thought I could give.
The ordinary afternoon that quietly changed the direction of everything.
Those were the moments moving the furniture inside me while I mistook them for ordinary days.
Perhaps that's the strange gift of becoming.
You rarely notice it while it's happening.
Only later do you realize you've been making a home inside yourself all along.
August begins in the space between who we were and the person beginning to answer back. As you move through these pages—from Dear 37 to Brittany's story, from the wisdom of bell hooks to the conversations gathered throughout this month's issue—you may find that each room is asking the same quiet question from a different corner.
Maybe that's what these margins will become, too.
A place for the thoughts that don't need to be loud to stay with us.
Before You Turn the Page...
What quiet part of your life might you only understand in the margins?
