What Insecure Left Us
Twelve images. Five seasons. Ten years of the moments, relationships, jokes, and becoming that stayed with us.
October 9, 2026
Some television stays with you as plot.
Insecure stayed in pieces.
A bathroom mirror. A couch somebody needed to get off of. Four women and a round of drinks. Kelli being Kelli. Los Angeles after dark. A block party that took an entire season to reach. Friends who loved each other enough to get it wrong, get older, and eventually find their way back.
Ten years later, you can see one image and remember everything around it.
That is where this exhibition begins.
Across twelve works, we return to the images that became part of how we remember Insecure. Some are important because they changed something. Some because they made us see these characters differently. And some are here because, ten years later, they still make us laugh.
Welcome to What Insecure Left Us.
01. The Mirror
Season 1 · Episode 1 — “Insecure as F**k”
Issa is twenty-nine, unsure about her relationship, restless at work, and beginning to wonder whether the life she has is still the life she wants.
Before the block parties, the career pivots, the friendship fractures and repairs, there was Issa and the mirror.
It became the place where she could try out the version of herself she wasn’t quite ready to be anywhere else. She could rap there. Argue there. Hype herself up there. Say the thing there first.
The rest of us just happened to be allowed in the room.
02. The Couch
Season 1 · Episode 1 — “Insecure as F**k”
Lawrence has been out of work for two years, and the future he and Issa once imagined together has started to feel increasingly far away.
The couch was comfortable. That was part of the problem.
Lawrence had plans. Ideas. Applications. Reasons things hadn’t worked yet. But from where Issa stood, all of it looked a lot like the same man sitting in the same place while she wondered how much longer she was supposed to wait.
Five seasons later, Lawrence would become almost unrecognizable from the man we met here.
But first, he had to get off the couch.
03. We Did Say
Season 1 · Episode 8 — “Broken as F**k”
What was supposed to be a birthday weekend in Malibu has become something messier: old resentments, new truths, and four friends who know one another well enough to make pretending difficult.
There are arguments you can only have with people who already know the footnotes.
That was part of what made this friendship feel familiar. Issa, Molly, Kelli and Tiffany could be loving, judgmental, petty, protective, wrong and absolutely certain they were right—sometimes before the appetizers arrived.
And somehow, they kept coming back to the table.
04. Remember Me Different
Season 3 · Episode 5 — “High-Like”
Kelli came to Coachella to have a good time. By the end of the night, she has been tased by security and is being escorted out while Beyoncé is beginning somewhere without her.
Kelli had one request:
Remember me different.
There is something particularly cruel about getting tased at Coachella while Beyoncé is performing somewhere you can no longer access.
There is something particularly Kelli about turning that into one of the funniest exits in the entire series.
Some lines survive because they were profound.
This one survived because Kelli said it.
05. The Last Dragon
Season 3 · Episode 8 — “Ghost-Like”
Issa is turning thirty. Her old job is gone, her next move is unclear, and the idea that will eventually become the Block Party is only beginning to take shape.
Thirty arrives without the answers Issa might have expected twenty-nine to produce.
She is between things. Between jobs. Between versions of herself. Sitting in a park with a glass in her hand, celebrating a birthday while still trying to figure out what, exactly, comes next.
But something has shifted.
For so much of Insecure, uncertainty made Issa feel behind.
Here, it begins to look a little more like possibility.
06. The Block Party
Season 4 · Episode 5 — “Lowkey Movin’ On”
After months of planning, setbacks and figuring it out as she goes, Issa finally brings the Block Party to Inglewood.
Look at all those people.
That matters.
Because we met Issa unsure of her job, unsure of her relationship, unsure of herself. Now an entire street is full because she had an idea and kept going long enough to make it real.
The night would become complicated. Molly would arrive. Things would be said.
But before all of that, there was this.
The thing Issa imagined existed.
And people came.
07. Lowkey Happy
Season 4 · Episode 8 — “Lowkey Happy”
After years apart—and after becoming different people—Issa and Lawrence finally sit down long enough to talk about what happened between them.
There had been enough time for the anger to lose some of its volume.
So they talked. About what happened. About who they had been. About who they were now. And somewhere inside all that history was the same Issa who once had to tell Lawrence:
“I ain’t get no woot woots on my phone.”
That is part of what made watching them find their way back to each other work. The history wasn’t erased just because they had grown beyond it.
They could finally talk about the past without having to live there.
08. Looking for Tiffany
Season 4 · Episode 10 — “Lowkey Lost”
Tiffany is missing. Whatever else has been happening between them will have to wait.
Everybody starts looking.
Issa. Molly. Kelli. Derrick. The people who know Tiffany, the people who love her, the people who understand that this is no longer the night anyone thought they were having.
And for Issa and Molly, all the hurt is still there. Nothing has magically been repaired because something more urgent happened.
They simply stop making the friendship the question for a while.
Their friend is missing.
Go find her.
09. The Table
Season 4 · Episode 10 — “Lowkey Lost”
After a season spent moving farther apart, Issa and Molly finally sit across from one another again.
No audience. No dramatic speech. No convenient way around what happened.
Just a table and two women who have loved each other long enough to know that loving each other does not automatically make friendship easy.
Molly called.
Issa came.
Sometimes repair begins that quietly.
10. Remember Me Different, Apparently
Season 5 · Episode 1 — “Reunited, Okay?!”
Back at Stanford for their college reunion, Kelli discovers that her alma mater has mistakenly included her among its deceased alumni.
IN MEMORIAM.
There is Kelli.
Very much alive.
After years of giving us some of the best lines on Insecure, Kelli gets to stand in front of a program announcing that she has apparently died and discover what people had to say about her once they thought she was gone.
Which, unfortunately for Stanford, means Kelli is available to provide notes.
Years earlier, she asked to be remembered different.
Technically, they tried.
11. Loving Me While I Was Me
Season 5 · Episode 10 — “Everything Gonna Be, Okay?!”
Molly is married. Issa is beside her. After everything their friendship survived, neither woman is who she was when we met her.
The wedding is beautiful.
But this is the image.
Issa behind Molly, helping her out of the dress. No argument left to win. No distance left to measure. Just the ordinary intimacy of knowing someone well enough to know where the zipper is.
Five seasons of friendship brought them here.
They grew up.
And they still chose each other.
12. The Mirror, Again
Season 5 · Episode 10 — “Everything Gonna Be, Okay?!”
Years have passed. Issa has built a life that twenty-nine-year-old Issa couldn’t yet see clearly.
And there she is again.
No bathroom rap. No rehearsal. No trying on another version of herself before she takes it into the world.
Just Issa.
The mirror was there when she didn’t know who she was becoming.
It seems right that it was there when she finally did.
