The Conversations That Changed Us
Some conversations don't change your life the first time you hear them.
Sometimes, the person telling you who you are has been saying it for years. You hear them. You might even believe them. But believing something about yourself and having the courage to live it are two different things.
For Hope Narcisse, that person has always been her mother.
And the conversation? It wasn't about becoming somebody new. It was about finally allowing herself to be the person her mother had seen all along.
We asked Hope one question:
What conversation changed your life?
Hope Narcisse with her mother.
In Hope's Words
I was asked what conversation I've had that has changed my life.
I feel like this conversation has been happening for many years.
Over the course of my life, I was blessed with a mother who instilled so much in me. And the conversation that I feel like I'm finally living is to no longer be afraid.
Be who you are.
Be big. Be loud. Be bold. Be courageous.
You've been shy your whole life.
For what?
Behind that shyness is somebody larger than life in there, and the world deserves to see it.
For a long time, I hid behind my shyness because it was comfortable.
People couldn't judge me for being me and being who I am. Being opinionated. Being honest. Being loud. Being everything that I hid behind my shyness.
It's finally coming to fruition for me.
Be who you are. Be bold. Do too much. Be everything that you truly are at your core.
Because if you close your eyes today or tomorrow, did you live life authentically?
Or did you live life based on who the world thought you should be? Who you should perform to?
I'm finally living my life in a way that's loud and outspoken.
I'm still finding my way and what that looks like.
Still nerve-racking.
But I'm coming out of my shell because I've been encouraged to let go of the things that no longer serve me.
And this shell that I've developed over the years, for many reasons, I don't think it serves me anymore.
It's terrifying.
Nobody's ever done it. I'm the first one to ever do it.
It is scary.
I feel like I'm doing it wrong most of the time.
But I'm doing it.
So, shout-out to my mom for making sure that I had all the things in life that she knew to give me.
I'm blessed beyond any measure.
I owe it to her. Not in an indebted way, but in an I appreciate you for seeing me when nobody else did way.
I appreciate you for pushing me when I didn't always have the ability to push myself.
It's been scary, but I'm doing it.
It's still scary, but I'm doing it.
The conversation I've had that changed my life was to be you.
You are enough.
You don't know where being you is gonna take you.
Do it.
Show them who you are.
I'm showing them who I am, Mom.
It's terrifying.
