EDITOR’S NOTE
November 2026
Some people will never say they missed you. They’ll just ask what time you’re coming over, then tell you there’s food.
I have a soft spot for that kind of person. I also know you may have to survive a comment about your hair before they hand you a plate.
There’s a lot happening in the space between what we feel and how we behave.
This November, we’re spending time there.
The Things We Do follows us into our relationships, our work, our private negotiations. The plans we keep meaning to make. The opinions we offer without being asked. The effort we put into getting dressed for someone who already knows exactly what we look like.
Some of it is tender. Some of it deserves a raised eyebrow. I wanted room for both.
As I worked on this issue, I kept coming back to how much a small gesture can hold. An invitation can carry years of friendship. A familiar song can change the atmosphere between two people. A child can repeat something you say and suddenly you’re hearing yourself from the other side of the room.
November brings its own choreography: coordinating calendars, deciding who’s bringing what, remembering which subjects require a strategic trip to the kitchen. This year, my daughter turns five on Thanksgiving. Somewhere between planning her birthday and thinking about the holiday, I’ve been considering what she’ll remember—and which details she’ll remember entirely differently than I do.
That curiosity runs through these pages. I’m interested in what people make of the ordinary business of living, especially when it gets funny, complicated, or a little too familiar.
Come spend some time with us this month. You may recognize somebody.
Possibly yourself.
